Yeah, I’m good thanks - by Hannah Lau-Walker, UK

I really like this video because the animation is so smooth and the transitions work so well that it feels like one swift motions, there’s no cuts and it all lines up together. I think the story can be relatable, as everyone has times when they want to say how tired they are, but they don’t want to burden others so we all just say “Yeah, I’m good thanks”.

Wake Up - by Tiago Teixeira, UK

I think Wake Up is an interesting short film. It seems to me that the narrative and the shots make it appear as part of the horror genre. One way you can tell it’s a horror is by the lighting, not a single shot is bright, all of them are dark.

A Walk Home - by Louise C Galizia, UK

A Walk Home seems like a real-life horror to me. The narrative shows the fear women experience on nights when they are walking home alone. I like the lack of a steady cam because I think the camera being shaky shows just how scary the situation is. If the camera was still, then the situation would seem calm but the woman in the film is anything but calm as she’s walking home.

Dragons - by Alfie Dale, UK

I like this film because of how well the creator has showed it is real life. They have used close-ups to show just how real the emotions on the mother’s face is. There is a clear lack of a soundtrack because a soundtrack reminds people that a film is just a film, but what’s happening in this narrative to this mother and daughter is a very real thing that happens to so many people.

Headspace - by Murphee Thompson, UK

I like this film because they did a good job of using lighting to show how out of this world the astronaut is. The mix of purple and red lights is something that can connect the dots for the viewer and show that she’s in space without literally telling the audience. The close-ups on the astronaut’s face are a really good idea because not only does it force us to see how serious she’s feeling, but it also means the creators didn’t need to make a set for the spaceship.

My Depict idea

My favourite genre is horror, so I was inspired by a story I made last year. I thought of a short film showing a woman walking out of a room and into a long corridor, however when she walks out the camera shows a big silhouette of some kind of monster at the other end of the corridor, and with a mix of cut transitions and shot types, it would be a quick paced film of the monster trying to catch the woman, but she is oblivious to how close the monster is to her.
